And what a weather shock. We had beautiful weather in Maui, except for one day that it rained hard, and another where the wind howled all day. But heck, it was warm, we had rum drinks, and I wasn’t at work, so it wasn’t all bad. It’s been in the low 30’s most of this week since we’ve been home, with rain and grey skies, and yesterday morning we woke up again to snow. Sheesh.
We did lots of cool stuff in Hawaii, as well as lots of relaxing by the ocean. We did a luau, saw whales, and drove up to the top of Haleakala Crater. It was socked in with fog on the drive up, but cleared off as we neared the summit, and was in full sun by the time we got to the top. On the way up, we saw a few miserable looking bicyclists coming down the mountain in full rain gear, looking wet and cold. It seems there are quite a few lunatic people who get up in the middle of the night so they can go to the top and stand there in the fog and rain at sunrise.

On the whale watch cruise, a big whale breached twice in the span of a few minutes right in front of our boat. We didn’t catch the whale in the photo, but caught the splash-down.

Aren’t Banyan trees just the coolest. thing. ever. They grow here, mainly a bit south of here and I’m just fascinated by them.
One look at that Windex water, and I’m hovering between envious and hateful. I look out the window, and I’m seeing two feet of snow. One month until vacation in Phoenix…one month…

Welcome back. Maui is one of my favorite places on earth. I love that banyan tree in Lahaina. The last time we were there they were having a big arts and crafts fair. At least we had sunshine today!

Ahhh – this is the life. I like that you took a Claudia-like sock picture…but Claudia, who was also in Hawaii this past week, didn’t take any knitting/sock pictures. Did you see her while you were there? I’m so glad Sweet Pea flies Princess Class. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

That banyan tree is wonderful. And that is a most intriguing piece of lace. I can’t wait to see it finished.
Actually, the bike ride down the volcano/mountain was one of the few highlights we had in Mauai. (But it would definitely have not been worthwhile getting up in time to see the sunrise once they quoted the statistics of how often you can actually see the sunrise up there….!!!!)The only way I would go back to that particular island is in order to see the whales – so I am jealous of that aspect of your trip!
What a marvelous time you had–and thanks for letting us visit vicariously. It’s cold and snowy outside here in Wisconsin, but sitting in the bright sunlight coming in front window makes me feel as if I am on a beach. I’m glad to see that Sweetpea doesn’t travel in the baggage hold. Much to cold there, even for a bear’s fur. My daughter’s Beverly Bunny also travels in the cabin, but stuffed inside her pillow’s case–she travels with a pillow and Beverly. Beverly is also applying to colleges, along with my daughter. They are worried that they won’t get accepted at the same places!! Beverly plans to major in tunnel engineering.
