Nights On The Lake

I got nothin’, so I’m reduced to posting cell phone photos of the lake at sunset. Here are two recent evenings. Man, I love summer.

Knitting and spinning are proceeding. I’m working on a stealth project, possibly there will be a Ravelry link soon so the intended recipient can’t see it. Not yet, not yet. Yes, there will be a new baby in the extended family this summer.

Spinning is coming along. I’m having enough fun that I’m looking at wheels. Yes, I know. It was inevitable. I’m at least trying to be smart enough to not just order the damn thing sight unseen. I have an appointment with a local spinner-shop owner-fiber-lady next week when I’m off work to test drive* some wheels. My current flame is a Kromski Minstrel, but I’m certainly easily swayed. What do you all have, if you are spinners?

*Shhhh. Please, don’t tell my spouse that “test drive some wheels” is code for “buy a wheel and bring it home in the back seat of the car”. Let him have his little delusions.

  1. Beautiful pictures!!!
I have a Lendrum Double Treadle. I am not coordinated enough for a single treadle so I had to go for the double.

  2. I have 5 wheels, all different, and all special in some way. (and you thought yarn acquisition was a problem!)
I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to try many wheels before you buy one. Some people’s spinning style just doesn’t work with some wheels. And if you’re working too hard to spin on your wheel, you’ll find excuses not to spin.

  3. Wow, your cell takes gorgeous pictures!
Um… I think that by posting your code on the internets, he might figure it out. 😉

  4. Sometimes a little spousal deception is required in the land of knitting. My husband thinks all skeins of yarn cost $5 or less. I will not correct him on that, because then he’ll throw a conniption when he sees how much yarn I have.

  5. I have an Ashford traditional and a Majacraft Rose, also had a Reeves double drive traditional. I really prefer the double treadle so do try both for more than a few minutes. Also look at the double drive and scotch tension differences. I find I can adjust my spinning better for yarn thickness with scotch tension. I also hold the fiber in my left hand and the traditional wheels set up for holding fiber supply in the right hand and after years of spinning and Alden Amos’s book I finally realized that was why I sat in a funny position in relation to the wheel. The Majacraft lets me adjust the flyer assembly over to the right to facilitate sitting directly in front of the wheel. Have fun.

  6. Wonderful — a RoadTrip of the SpinningWheel sort!
I have a Fricke double treadle with LevelWind flyer (woolee winder). It has scotch tension and is great. I’m loving it.
    Enjoy your test drive.

  7. I have a Lendrum DT which I truly love. I am finally getting my second wheel in July…a Schacht Matchless. I can’t wait!

  8. I have a Schacht double treadle. Love. It. It could be your one and only wheel for life. (But it won’t be.)

  9. Beautiful nights on the lake. I’m jealous.
The Kid is graduating tonight; so, all is well!

  10. I have a Kromski Minstrel and I love it. She is a beautiful piece of art for the home and spins like a dream. You won’t be sorry!

  11. Lovely photos! I started with a Louet – model # ? – not made anymore. I also have a Lendrum double treadle and a Womack Butterly electric spinner. I would recommend the Lendrum for anyone interested in a wheel! It folds and the complete set has a regular head, a fast head, and a plying head. It has enormous versatility and is very easy to use.

  12. crazy crazy crazy…I was JUST making my observation of our ‘north’ of our mountain the sun goes and the sun ray is fuzzy-ing the peak. Just loving it and then I click on your view! Summer views are grand aren’t they?

  13. I love my Ashford Traveller, but what is great for me may not be for you. When I was test driving wheels, there was one wheel that I could not spin on, at all! Good Luck and have fun with the process.
Love the lake photos. If you have that view, you are a lucky lady!

  14. I love my Minstrel both for the spinning and the beauty of it. I like having both Scotch tension and double drive. While the Minstrel is double treadle, I find that I often treadle with one foot only…..the wheel allows me that choice. While the wheel doesn’t fold up, it does go in the back of the car nicely and I find that when I go to spin-ins, I am usually spinning while others are still getting their Little Gem or Lendrums out of the bags. I have not spun on one, but you might want to give the Sonata a try if you want a folding wheel. Have fun with which ever you choose, but I am pulling for the Minstrel.
