Pretty Much Random Irish Photos

We’re in Doolin, and have enjoyed a couple of nights of “good craic” in the pubs here. We met a couple of Irish women last night, Maeve and Martina, who pointed out that “good craic” in American English doesn’t mean quite the same as it does in Irish English. Here the term means good fun, in NYC, it might get you arrested. At any rate, we’re still having a great time, and here are some photos to prove that.

Fuschias were imported here some decades ago, and now grow wild. The hedgerows along many of the roads are about eight feet tall, and mostly fuschia.

There are a lot of sheep here. I still haven’t found yarn shops.

The Catholic Church is still here. There’s been a bit of a resurgence in the old faith with the economy tanking. There’s a surprise.

Megalithic tombs, standing stones, ruined castles. There are a lot of them here. If you’re lucky enough to have one in your pasture, you can charge admission.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Cliffs of Moher are really  the Cliffs Of Insanity from Princess Bride?

Just a pretty photo to prove that there was actually a bit of sunshine today. We’ve actually had remarkably good weather for the past two weeks, though today it was blustery, with showers and enough wind that we could hardly stand up straight to take photos up on those cliffs.

We head to County Galway tomorrow for a few days. You know the drill. If there’s internets there, you’ll see photos!

  1. Small world! I jsut started a book called “Casting Off” that mentions Doolin! Otherwise never would have heard of it before!

  2. You are having way too much fun, but that is a good thing. Enjoying your travel updates. You sound like you travel like we do, airline tickets and a rental car and go from there.

  3. Princess Bride is one of the all time favorite movies in my household… and I totally agree – those must be the cliffs of insanity! what a hoot you are to think of that there (tho I might have too)
Sorry about the lack of yarn shops – but it sounds like the great beer, and good craic has more than made up for it.
And have you packed that dark haired irishman into your suitcase for me yet?? (heh heh) and yes, I will totally look forward to the personal delivery! (just make sure he’s single and well heeled…. hah hah hah)

  4. When we were at the Cliffs of Moher we watched a storm come in and then it proceeded to rain up the cliffs! So glad you are having a great time.

  5. I’d say whether the cliffs are or aren’t the ones from the film isn’t the issue. It’s how you FEEL about that possibility that needs to be explored. . .

    😉

  6. Beautiful photos. If you are a tea drinker, try to lay your hands on some Punjana to take home. Best black tea ever, and it isn’t sold in the U.S.

  7. I’m finally catching up on your travels, and all I can say is WOW! Looks like you are having a fabulous time. Your photos are gorgeous.

  8. How did I not know that your blog had moved!

And missing Ireland pictures, I’m so sad.

Yes, the Cliffs of Insanity, the whole time I was visiting them (5 years ago this November), and getting blown over on them – literally I hit my head by that little castle tower – I kept throwing out the lines of the Princess Bride. My travel companions were getting quite annoyed!
