This was a conversation over coffee at my house this morning:
Me (reading email): “I got an email from Peace Fleece that ALL of their yarn is 20% off through the weekend!”
John: “And just how much Peace Fleece do you already have in the stash?”
Me (fires up the database, sorts the yarn by manufacturer): “Um, I have enough different colors for six Peace Fleece sweaters. Seven, if you count the one in the knitting bag that I haven’t finished.”
John: “20% off is a great deal. But it’s 100% off if you don’t buy something you don’t need.”
Me (silent for a few minutes): “Point taken.”

Yes, I tore apart the stash to pull those all out. I’m thinking it’s going to be easier to go buy a new yarn box than to try to get those all back into the correct numbered box.
And as long as I’m at it, here’s the seventh color. This is John’s sweater, or what will be a sweater once I’ve finished the sleeves.

I was discussing stash and cash with a friend yesterday. She doesn’t knit. She was appalled at the amount of stash I have. Then our other friend chimed in and told us how much her husband has spent in the last 6 years on his hobby, coin collecting. Needless to say, my $$ expenditure seems like a drop in the bucket compared to his six figure expenditure! And, I don’t need to spend $$ on buying and installing a safe… Well, maybe for the qivuit and cashmere skeins… Sadly, no Peace Fleece for me anyway.

I have an aquaintance who has season tickets to the Patriots. The Denver Broncos game ticket cost $245. Parking cost $40. They tailgated. Drank. Your guess as to the cost of that….$150? Then $200 the next day to get the car detailed after one of his buddies spilled grill lighter fluid in the back. That’s a LOT of yarn, and a lot of time spent knitting/spinning/weaving compared to one 6 hour patriots exploit. I felt better.
John is a spoil sport. (And right. Of course he’s right.)
Remember this: research shows that money spent on experiences brings greater long-term happiness than money spent on things. Yarn counts as both experience and thing. But husband has an excellent point.
