First, I would like to thank everybody who sent good wishes about my hand. I can’t type well enough to respond to each of you individually, so this will have to do for now. Things seem to be going as well as I’d expect, though I’m still relatively drugged up on narcotics for the pain, so who knows.
Damn it. DAMN IT, I said. You just don’t realize all the things that require two hands until you lose the use of one of them. I am fortunate to have a husband who is quite accustomed already to waiting on me, so he hasn’t really had to act much differently. I have learned how to brush my teeth with my left hand, and managed to eat spaghetti last night, after a fashion. Try buttering your toast with one hand, and see how that goes. Getting a bra on turns out to be a two person job, and I have to say that John was quite a good sport about trying to wield the flatiron and tame my hair this morning.
I dreamed about knitting last night. Looking at knitting books and patterns is no help, I just get more frustrated. I have my first physical/occupational therapy appointment on Tuesday, and should have a better idea at that point how long this will all take.
I did get a little package in the mail yesterday:
Go to Patternworks if you want your very own.
Back to reading. I’m trying very hard not to behave like a spoiled two-year old with a temper tantrum.
Lorette, I’m so sorry you are still having pain. Hopefully the therapy will not increase you pain, too much; and you can get on the knitting road soon.
I think you should behave like a spoilt two year old if you like! If it makes the time go faster or alternatively lets you vent some anger….why the hell not!
PS. Can you type well enough to rack up some internet shopping! Now that would help make you feel better surely.
Blimey ! I missed your last post. How dreadful.Stuck at home and no knitting !
Seriously I wish you a fast recovery of full hand function.A shame about Spain.Sitting in the sun with vino would have been good.
Take care and pout as much as you like.
There are definitely times when whining like a two-year old is justified . . . consider it one of the few silver linings here! It’s not something you can milk for TOO long, but since you can reasonably get away with it for a little while, by all means, feel free!
I agree with Deb. Go ahead and whine. One handedness just sucks.
Oh I know how you feel. I lost the use of my right hand for a while, and it’s a pain in the patooty! I have one of those sheep measuring tapes too. They are too cute 🙂 Wishing again for you speedy recovery.
Well! I go off for just one weekend and look what happens when I’m not around to look after you! I am so sorry, but glad that you had a good surgeon and hope that there is no permanent damage. I’m especially sorry about you having to postpone the trip. Just baby yourself and let your husband wait on you ( was he a good sport about helping with the bra, too?)!!
Hopefully the therapy will help. You might tell them that a massage is in order!
Oh baby! I’m knitting for you in proxy, hon. Working on a turtleneck shrug out of the scarf style book. I’m sorry you only have one working hand. But it will get easier. And I think the PT people will be happy you’re a knitter. Good therapy, once you’ve had a chance to heal those tendons. I prescribe bourbon and plenty of red wine. Whine? Wine!
Just catching up on some blog reading – what a shock to read your last post! You poor thing – wishing you a very speedy recovery!
I am so sorry about your hand. Sending warm and healing thoughts your way. At least you saved the wine. Now you know you sure need it!! If you need diversions from somewhere else let us know. Regional wines and chocolates might help you heal faster!!
Now hang in there.
THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH ONE HAND:
1) Ring a little bell for assistance with unmastered one hand skills.
2)c-r-e-a-t-e w-e-r-d-s w s-e-v-e-r-e s-c-a-r-s s-c-a-b-s!
(get it? I only used my left side of the keyboard….create werds w severe scars scabs! Im sorry that you only have one punctuatory key to work with. You’ll just have to exclaim everything for awhile…
3) Place premade cookiedough sqaures on cookie sheet and bake. Use left hand to eat when finished.

You poor thing! OUCH!…and I can imagine how you miss using two hands!! and the lack of knitting…oh gosh….
plus is it true doctors make the worse patients?
I’m feeling for you!!!
SO sorry to read about your hand! My daughter severed a tendon on her pinky finger 2 years ago – so I recognize the wrapping and the “hook”. Since she couldn’t play her guitar, she took tai chi classes with me. Something to consider. I wish you a very speedy recovery! When the time comes – take your knitting to the physical therapists and see what they can think up. In the meantime, you could check out, ahem,a knitting machine. This might sound awful to some, but I use my basic bulky for the boring stockinette parts of sweaters. I think you could do it with one hand…
Hope PT/OT went well yesterday.
*giggle* John with a flat iron….did you take pictures?! 😉
That really is love, him flat ironing your hair.
If worse came to worse, you could get one of those wonder knitters/Embellishknit (I think that’s what they’re called) and just make miles and miles of I cord. It’s not the same, but it is (vaguely) knitting.
