Slippery Slope

Or,

How Projects Multiply When You’re Not Careful

I am generally most comfortable with a “three project” rule. One generally is a sweater-like project, one is a sock, and the third is something else, a lace shawl, for example. I am a slow knitter anyway, so having a multitude of things in progress makes me a bit nutty, as it seems like I never get anything finished.

In the past few months, though, I have started down that slippery slope of multiple WIPs. First it was that eggplant sweater that got put into timeout. (It’s still there, I plan on working on it this fall.) Now that I’ve found that it isn’t so bad to have two sweaters going at the same time, I am throwing caution to the wind.

Yes, I started a second lace project this morning. I still have that purple Icelandic thing going, and I still love the pattern, and the yarn, and the book. I’ll keep working on that one, too. But I found this on my blog excursions this morning, and couldn’t resist.

You can get yours here. It uses one skein of Mountain Colors Weaver’s Wool, and I just happened to have about ten different colors of this in the stash, earmarked for socks. This color is Sagebrush, by the way. Susan has come up with an easy lace shawl pattern that is intended to suck in introduce beginning lace knitters to the joys of making intentional holes in their knitting.

Here’s another photo. I haven’t decided if I like this on this size needle or not.

I might try going down a needle size (this is a size 4.5mm) to see what it looks like. Or maybe not.  Susan thinks that I can finish this in a weekend. We’ll see. That would get the project numbers back towards balance, wouldn’t it?

I haven’t forgotten that I promised a link to the house remodeling photo show. John finally finished getting the last of the photos sorted and uploaded, and you’ll find it here. I’ll warn you ahead of time, there are about a gazillion photos in there. Have a great holiday weekend!

  1. Oh, great, another WIP for me, I’ve been itching to make a shawl, now an easy one is a “good” thing. I’ll give it a go this weekend.

  2. Very pretty, and I think the gauge is just fine. As for WIPs, I have many on time out and three active projects. Resisting the temptation to cross the slippery slope is a full time occupation.

  3. Your Blog is such a joy to read. I looked at that same shawl this morning. I think it is just lovely. Here is a KAL I think you might just like. I know that would be another project started, but it is so lovely. The Black Water Abby is here in Denver. The yarn is so nice. Gaye

  4. I had about given up on all lace knitting but you might have me hooked with this one. It looks beautiful just the way it is!

  5. That’s a nice looking pattern, I’ll have to check it out! Thanks for the link.
I’m usually a 3 project girl, too, but Christmas knitting has caused me to throw all caution to the wind!

  6. Stunning show. I liked the dog leading the construction guy, and the people morphing onto the chairs. I want your life.
The new shawl looks pretty cool. How many yards in that skein? Must be one of their big ones. “One skein” is all relative.
The design modifications in the finished project are interesting…fewer tschotchkes? And the Jap maples are beautiful.

  7. Oh. My. Goodness. First off, I just have to say you have an astoudingly beautiful home. I think the construction co. did a great job! When can I move in? I don’t recall reading the damage had gone all around to the front, or was that a last-minute add on?
Umm.. Startitis. I just let it take me. I’m fighting off an attack as I type this. Too many sweater patterns, not enough hands. Shhh don’t tell anyone but I’m working on Sizzle from the Garter Belt. I’m SUPPOSED to be swatching for a kid sweater, and knitting other-kid socks. I’ll get to those..

  8. I could be quite happy starting a zillion projects one right after another. But I try to keep mine WIP’s in check too for the same reasons you do. Now with spinning… my knitting gets even less time.
I like the shawl you started. I look forward to seeing you modeling it tomorrow. 😉

  9. I’m very impressed with anyone who can knit a lace shawl. I’m working on some lace socks right now and going nuts doing it. Guess I’m sliding down that slippery slope, too as I have more than three projects going! Two projects at a time works best for me….help!

  10. Had to re-comment. I HAD to go to the site & order the shawl pattern. I thought I was safe for the weekend (from spending). What can one do? Sooner or later, I have to learn lace!

  11. Shame on you, I couldn’t resist and have bought the pattern, wound my Mtn Colors and started this shawl. I’m supposed to be dealing with a sweater that has gone off gauge and into near ruin or finishing a gift that’s overdue. But I’m loving this easy knit.

  12. I saw your pic on Yarnharlot’s site! I’m so jealous! And BTW, I did wind up buying the shawl pattern. Couldn’t resist. Even ordered yarn for it…

  13. I linked over from yarn harlot.
The shawl is going to be beautiful when it is finished! I love the yarn! I wouldn’t have been able to reist starting that project either…:-)

  14. Congrats for sticking to 3 projects for so long. I think four or five are the appropriate amount–particularly if one is so old tha tthe person for whom it is intended has gained (or lost) significant weight and the item no longer fits–that is, if it would be completed in a reasonable period of time.
I thought of you this weekend as I spent 9 hours in the ER and then two days in the hospital. I had a colonoscopy on Friday morning and by Friday afternoon was in the ER with extreme head pain and complete amnesia. I had a CAT scan (or so my husband tells me) and lots of tests and I was extremely distraught. Slowly, my memory has returned, althought it is still very difficult to concentrate. Thank god I have some easier knitting projects in my project stash.
Diagnosis: Transient Global Amnesia brought on by the Versed given for the colonoscopy.

  15. Oh I have so many projects, but I’m trying to shift into being a one project person. I feel more accomplished when I get more done on one single project. But it’s a hard thing to shift into.
