They Say It’s Your Birthday…

Just had to announce publicly. It’s today, I’m 50 years old. Who knows where the time went?

One of my favorite aging stories is when my mom was in her late 70’s. She had severe Parkinsons disease by then and could barely string two words together, and we weren’t always too sure she was with us in the conversation. My sister and I had taken her shopping (her favorite activity, right up to the end!), and stopped for lunch. We were talking about this and that, and the topic of her age came up. My sister said something about her being seventy-something. My mother got this horrified look on her face, snapped to attention, and said very clearly, “NO, not THAT old!”.

My biggest disappointment today? Nobody patted me on the head yesterday and said, “Oh, don’t bother coming in to work tomorrow, just stay home and have a lovely day.”

I guess if that’s all I have to complain about, I’m a lucky woman.

NO, not THAT old, indeed.

Yeah, we’re gonna have a good time.

  1. Hi! I’m a lurker who’s been reading your blog for some time, and I just wanted to wish you a very Happy Birthday! Love your blog (and your house!). Take care.

  2. Happy birthday! I actually look forward to 50 (I’m mid-40’s). Life seems to get better. I wouldn’t go back to being a 20-something for anything.

  3. Happy Birthday Lorette!!! I just turned 47 last month…. I’m not that old, either.
I’ve always been of the opinion that everyone should get their birthay off as a personal holiday!

  4. Happy Birthday Lorette!! I am surprised that you’re 50 – I would have pegged you for a LOT younger. Seriously. All said, though, I still have you beat. Hope you’re day is great, work or not.

  5. Happy Birthday Lorette!!!! I’m as close as one can get to 50 too 😉
Hope they throw you a party at work!!!
As my SIL said on her 50th, it’s better than NOT turning 50! Many many more! All the best Lorette…

  6. “Happy-Happy, Joy-Joy”!!! 50 is fab! I turn 50 in Feb., but I’ve already started practicing saying it! People like you make it easier for others! Oh yeah, I’m a lurker too, I first stumbled accross your blog while you were vacationing and listening to Bluegrass. My husband plays bluegrass and more, while I knit away!
Treat yourself special today! Happy Birthday! Karla

  7. Have a great day. Sorry you have to work. At 84 my mother is still not willing to admit her age. I am prould to wear my badge that says I am 50. Of course I have only 2 more months left before my next birthday.

  8. Happy Five-oh. And remember, Fifty is the new thirty…um…but I wouldn’t go through my thirties again if you paid me. Fifty is nifty, babe! Life just seems to get better and better.

  9. Happy Birthday Lorette! I am discovering you are really are as young (or old) as you feel!
Enjoy and look forward to many more!

  10. Happy Happy Birthday! I hate working on my birthday too. That should be against the law or something. Lucky for me, mine is Saturday and I don’t have to work on Saturday!! Yipee!
I hope your birthday was fun and wonderful…even if you did have to work.

  11. Lorette, I am a visiting nurse in my community. I have many, many women patients who are in their mid-90’s to my oldest being 105 year old. So, Grrll, you’re just a wee babe…only half-way there! 🙂 Happy Birthday, and may you have another strong, healthy 50 more!! Mother was right!…Not that old! Kate/Massachusetts

  12. Happy Birthday, fellow Libran! Now we know, if there’s two things we’ll always remeber as we age, it’s how old we are and SHOPPING! 🙂 I’m game!

  13. Happy, Happy Birthday Lorette!!!
I had a BD two days ago. I also had jury duty that day, and for my birthday, I was not picked for a jury! I played hookey the rest of the day.
    Many more,
    mk

  14. Happy Birthday! I turned 50 a couple months ago and I have to say — I was shocked! 😉 However, so far it seems to be a fine age and really not all that different from 49 – or even 40……

  15. I read on one of my yahoo lists, someone saying she would turn 40 next year, it sounded soo far away to me and then… I started to calculate and gee so am I, that is turning 40 next year that is.
These years seems to surprise you whatever the number is.
May you have many more happy knitting years ahead.
