This is for Lora. She and her husband are moving to the Pacific Northwest this year, and I got a very plaintive email recently asking about the weather. (Remember when you did this, Kris?)
Here’s the photo of the day. It was cool and grey this morning, then all of a sudden I looked up and the sun was out, one of those famous sun breaks that we get.
Not the best photo in the world, but yes, Lora, the sun does shine here. This is not an April Fools’ joke. Of course it’s supposed to rain all weekend, and it’s only 40 degrees right now. It’s sort of a wimpy little sun break, but sun nonetheless. You can even see shadows on the lawn. All the trees are leafing out, the camellias are bloomed, the pansies are out in full force. I caught a Stellar’s Jay in our front tree right outside my home office yesterday collecting twigs for a nest, so baby birds can’t be far behind. The boy ducks on the lake are starting to jockey around for the attention of the girl ducks. I think spring might be my favorite season here, but then I say that about summer and fall when they roll around, too.
What’s your favorite season where you live?
What a wonderful little treat to enjoy the sun on such a beautiful spring day. That photo is gorgeous.
Autumn is my favorite season. It always has been. Now that I live in New England, I have extra reason to like it – the fall foliage here is spectacular.
Thank you so much for the e-mail reply. And the picture. As I had said earlier, I’ve been spoiled with sun this past decade or so and the idea of not having it almost every day is a little scary. But the prospect of a new adventure in the Pacific NW is exciting and overall, I’m looking forward to it. Now, we just have to tell the boy and my mother-in-law that we’re moving. THAT should be fun!
Oh, and my favorite season is autumn. I really, really miss a true autumn…we don’t have one in southern CA!
my favorite season where I live now is Fall. Gorgeous, amazing weather and the leaves are amazing. When I lived in the Pacific NW my favorite season was summer. It was warm and humid enough that you didn’t feel like you lived in a desert, but not so humid that it was oppressive.
I like living where the seasons are very defined and my favorite of those is definitely SPRING! I love them all, but have no problem playing favorites.
It’s 73 and sunny in Minneapolis… which translates to WTF? 🙂
I too love autumn – the crisp air & woodsy smell – not to mention the light as evening approaches. Chris – it was 82 in the Chicago area today – less than 2 weeks ago, it was in the 30’s & snowy. In fact, I think last week it was in the 60’s one day & then 30’s the next. Typical spring weather in Chicago!
Autumn seems to be the winner here so far. It is my favorite too, but spring is very nice. So is winter. And summer occasionally is. I am anti-heat, however, so I am usually happy to see it go. That is a beautiful picture. It was indeed a nice day today. With every possible weather on for at least five minutes sometime during the day.
Spring is so hopeful and so welcome every year. Summer is a brief time of pure magic. Autumn surprises me every damned year because it is so glorious. Winter is the time to knit and to snuggle furry beasts (including my husband) for warmth.
Fall. Anywhere. Followed closely by winter, where it actually gets and stays cold.
The Stellar Jays are back in my yard, too! They are so pretty, aren’t they? You have rain and I have snow in the forecast…
Tee Hee… I remember that. Then I got up there and thought that thing had been photoshopped since I didn’t see the sun again for months. 🙂
Weird thing… we had such an odd winter here in Florida where we had weeks of temps in the 20’s. That never happens. But… while we had temps in the 20’s, y’all were in the 60’s and “unseasonably warm and sunny”. Dana and I kept seeing that on the weather report and thinking…when we were up there we had all rain and tons of snow!
Took me 15 years to get used too the rain. my lifesavers were a therapy light and goretex trail shoes. My favourite season is the one that starts on July 15th and ends around Sept 15th. I think they call it summer here 😉 Even the rainy times has its own beauty, though.
What a tranquil and lovely shot. I love your neck of the woods, even if every day isn’t sunny. On my first trip to Seattle, the sun was out for an entire week (and we could see Mt. Rainier the entire time). People kept telling me how unusual it was. For me, fall is simply the best. New York never looks lovelier than when all the trees are in brilliant color and the air is crisp and cool.
Fall, no question.
Spring for birding. Winter for desert hiking. Summer for sports. 365 days of Summer here.
